DeltaDigital's new uHealth Blog

A Norwegian colleague Karl Oyri who runs Delta Digital has just started a new uHealth Blog which is about research on clinical use of sensors in body area network scrutinizing the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Other actual radio standards are Bluetooth, WiBree (when available), ZigBee stack radios and UWB-IR.

He aims to look at not only the technological aspects, but how uHealth tools can be implemented in clinical settings to improve care and include the perspective of nurses, physicians and patients.

This is an important and growing area which will affect many of our lives, whether as patients or professionals in the future.

NHS SDO call for the investigation of The impact and implications of new technologies on the workforce

The NHS Service Delivery Organisation this week put out a call for proposals (Ref WRK240) related to current issues for the health and social care workforce.

They are seeking applications for
innovative proposals related to the following topics:
* The effectiveness of multi-professional team-working
* The contribution of the health and social care workforce in maintaining patient dignity
* The impact and implications of new technologies on workforce reconfiguration and the educational and training needs of managers and professionals
* The impact of staff motivation and wellbeing on patient care
* The public health workforce

Topic 3 "The impact and implications of new technologies on workforce reconfiguration and the educational and training needs of managers and professionals" looks particularly interesting, with the recognition that the management and delivery of care is being heavily influenced by the introduction of new technologies. The call suggests that there is a "lack of diversity in the sources of high-quality evidence regarding the impact of new information technology on workforce issues including the resources required for staff training (such as time and skills) and workflow redesign."

Proposals will need to address one or more of the following questions:
• What is the impact and what are the implications of new technologies on workforce reconfiguration and planning processes?
• What are the education and training needs of managers, professionals and users in the use of new technologies?
• How can the NHS develop appropriate decision-support tools using new technologies?
• How can the barriers to adopting new technologies be overcome?

Google advisory group on health

Google's official blog carried an announcement a few days ago New advisory group on health. It is unclear exactly what the role of this group will be , although there is speculation they will be developing an application for patients to store their medical information online. However the mission of the "Google Health Advisory Council" is stated to be "to help us better understand the problems consumers and providers face every day and offer feedback on product ideas and development".

The selection of individuals to participate has caused some concern by omitting certain types of professionals, such as nurses and medical librarians, and I can only see one patient representative (although I don't know all the individuals or the organisations they are affiliated to.

I am also worried the the "Council" appears to be dominated bu those from North America - when Google's reach is global.

Southern Institute for Health Informatics 9th Annual Conference

Registration is now open for the Southern Institute for Health Informatics 9th Annual Conference which will take place on Friday 21st September, in Portsmouth.

The theme for the conference is Collecting information near the patient.

* James Jackson, SmartSensor telemed Ltd, on the home monitoring service his company has developed
* Mark Smith, Met Office Consulting, on the COPD home alerting service he has been involved with

Who should attend?

The conference is aimed at healthcare professionals, senior managers and system developers both within the NHS and in companies supplying products and services to it. Academics with research or teaching interests in the above areas will also find plenty to interest them.


The cost of early registration (bookings made before 1st September) is £85 (with discounts for multiple attendees from the same organisation), which includes lunch.

Rutgers 2006 conference blog

Peter Murray, a regular contributor to this blog, is currently in San Francisco for the Rutgers 2006 25th (Anniversary) Annual International Nursing Computer and Technology Conference and will soon be joined by other members of the hi-blogs ‘krew’.

They will be providing reports, photos and opportunities to comment on the conference blog. I hope they have a great time & I will be following it as I'm tied up in the UK with marking, moderating, exam boards & finalising a research bid at present.

HEA HS&P elearning SIG meeting

Today I attended a meeting of the HEA Health Sciences & Practice, elearning Special Interest Group at the University of Worcester.

It was entitled "From Novice to Innovator" & covered a wide range of issues related to elearning.

The day was opened by Tim Johnson who used a valleys and hills analogy to represent those just starting out in this field and those who have achieved the dizzy heights.

Jenny Edwins, a midwifery lecturer, gave a novices view described her experiences wuitha module she runs. She talked about how her students were already communicating and therefore saw the discussion board as pointless. She identified advantages for lecturers in manging electrionic submissions of assignments, but little advantage for students.

I then gave a presentation about incorporating multimedia into elearning based on experience in the EU packs project.

Linsey Duncan-Pitt then gave a short presentation about the University of Wolverhampton's use of PebblePad, Hotpotatoes and SNAGIT software. Some interesting discussion arose about privacy & allowing access to different parts of information. She is conducting an E-Portfolio Survey for the HEA.

After lunch discussions and demonstrations continued including a demonstration of Course Genie, for converting word documents to html including mutimedia objects. Several participants gave examples from their own experience and their learning from the day. Discussion about selecting particular tools including Second Life raised lots of issues. The role of the SIG in developing and sharing ideas and learning was also discussed by participants.
